Kris Concentrates On Promotion

Kris Commons today said he would put contract thoughts behind him while he concentrates on securing promotion for Nottingham Forest.


The play-maker confirmed that very preliminary talks had taken place over his future at the City Ground but insisted Forest’s bid to reach the Championship remains his priority.

Commons will become a free agent in the summer but he is determined not to let that affect his performances on the pitch.

He said: ‘If I start thinking about that I won’t be playing as well as I can.

‘Contract talks, next year, this year, moving on, I’ll let other people talk about that. Hopefully I’ll do the best I can at Forest.’

Forest manager Colin Calderwood confirmed earlier this month that preliminary talks had taken place. But with no offer having yet been made, there remains no clear sign that the 23-year-old will be at the club beyond the end of the season.

Still the doubts surrounding his future have hardly had a detrimental effect on his form – with Commons being named League One player of the month for November and scoring six goals since returning from an ankle injury at the start of the season.

‘We had a little chat,’ said Commons. ‘He knows my situation and I know the club’s situation. It was a brief talk and nothing more than that. I just want to play as many games as I can and get ten goals this season. That will be a first for me in a season to hit double figures and a massive achievement.

‘If I can do my best and get Nottingham Forest promoted then that is all I’m concentrating on at the moment.

‘There’s probably seven or eight players playing for a contract. With people up in the summer you have to be playing well each week to show the manager that if we get promoted you can still do a job. It is pressure, but that’s what football is all about.

‘We’re top of the league so we’re not playing badly.

‘There are players in there feeling the pressure, but you’ve got to learn to play under that and if you don’t get a contract you move on. If you do, you snap it up and concentrate on the next couple of years.’
