Aitor Karanka has hinted that both Ryan Yates and Thomas Lam could leave before the transfer window shuts.

Speaking to the Nottingham Post, the Spaniard said that in the young English midfielder’s case, he would be staying as things currently stand but a lot can happen in the next few weeks:

“I do not know what will happen between now and August 31, when the loan market finishes. But for today, he has impressed me a lot. Everyone had told me that they had high opinions of him and, when you have worked with him for four or five weeks, you can understand why.”

With Lam, despite the Finnish international impressing somewhat since his return from loan at FC Twente, he is unlikely to get any game time due to the number of players ahead of him in the squad.

Karanka said that he had a conversation with the centre back about his future, and they will be looking to make the best decision for all parties.

While Yates could leave the City Ground on loan, it’s not known whether the Finnish defender would be sold permanently. His current contract expires next summer, and this transfer window would present the last opportunity to get any money for him.

The 24-year-old signed from Zwolle on a free transfer in 2016 but has made just 21 appearances for the club during his two-year stay in England.
