Junior on his way?

Paul Trollope has warned Bristol Rovers fans they may have to wait for a replacement for Junior Agogo. The striker’s departure to Nottingham Forest is expected to be completed in the next few days.

But first-team coach Trollope stressed the Pirates would not rush into a quick fix they may later regret. Agogo rocked Rovers last week by handing in his notice, claiming the club had breached his contract by refusing to honour a £125,000 release clause.

Chairman Geoff Dunford has refuted that charge and says the club will contest the case, but Agogo’s move to Forest looks imminent provided the clubs can agree on a fee or a player-exchange deal.

Rovers looked short of menace without Agogo in their 2-0 defeat at MK Dons, and Trollope said: ‘If the Junior situation can be resolved and we can get someone in, it could give us the boost we need and a bit more firepower.

‘Things are ongoing and it looks like it could happen, but you never know until things are signed and sealed and he has his medical.

‘Hopefully it will be sorted out sooner rather than later, whichever way it is going to be resolved.

‘We do need to find someone of quality and we don’t want to have to rush into a mistake.

‘We only want to bring in someone who can improve us, and if we have to wait for that then we have to wait. It’s not good short term but we don’t want to get someone who is not going to add to us.

‘We thought we had enough in forward areas to score some goals, but that didn’t prove to be the case (against MK Dons) because we lacked a bit of composure and thought around the box to create the chances we needed.’

Rovers played Richard Walker as a lone striker and Trollope admitted: ‘We are short in forward areas, although young Sean Rigg came on and gave a positive display, while Andy Sandell down the left was a threat for us all match.

‘There were some good performances within the team. James Hunt had a colossal game in midfield, and at the back we dealt very well with a lot of long balls.

‘But we haven’t made a good start and we know it’s important to stick together and show spirit and aggression. I thought we had that and probably deserved a point out of the game, but the bottom line is they scored two and we didn’t score any.

‘We weren’t good enough in the final third to get the goal we needed.

‘We feel a little bit hard done by. It was a spirited performance and we showed some aggression and had some decent play.

‘We just lacked in the final third in terms of quality of play and quality of pass.’

Trollope was unhappy with the decision to award MK Dons the free-kick that led to their opening goal. ‘I didn’t feel it was a free-kick because Byron Anthony won the ball,’ he said.

Rovers face another stiff test tomorrow night when they take on Luton Town in the Carling Cup at the Memorial Stadium.
