Nottingham Post journalist Paul Taylor believes that the club may consider letting Ben Brereton leave if they receive a £10m bid before the transfer deadline.
Blackburn Rovers are said to be keen to recruit the teenager on loan (with a purchase clause), but the Sun journalist Alan Nixon had reported £12m was the price tag that had been set.
Speaking in a webchat earlier today, Taylor thinks we may be tempted into selling for slightly less:
“The bottom line will be simple… And that is that every player has a price; there is a magic number that will persuade any club to ponder selling. There is an offer that will force any club to consider at least giving thought to selling one of their players.”
“But, in Brereton’s case, for me, that would have to be far more than £6m. If Oliver Burke was worth £15m, Brereton has to be worth something closer to that. Perhaps not quite as much. But certainly £10m as a minimum.”
When we polled fans earlier this week, the majority felt that Brereton shouldn’t be sold at any price. However, there are a couple of things to consider. The 19-year-old does have untapped potential but from his record so far, you do kind of wonder whether he’ll be worth more £10m in the future.
Of course, he’s played a lot of games out wide rather than in his more natural position through the middle, but his nine goals in 57 appearances doesn’t immediately suggest a prolific goalscorer.
In addition, the fact that he isn’t getting on the bench indicates that we may be willing to offload him. I still think a straight loan deal is more likely, and if we did choose to sell up, I’m sure Aitor Karanka would recruit a replacement before the end of the month.
