You know the saying that ‘sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me’?

You should try telling that to Nottingham Forest fans, because it appears as though names can indeed hurt, even if it’s just a slip of the tongue, because that’s what happened to large swathes of them last night.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville were in the process of discussing the greatest English football team of all time, and just for the record, Nottingham Forest’s famous side under Brian Clough in the late 1970s came 5th on that list.

Should the Forest team have been higher on the list?

Yes

Yes

No

No

However, it wasn’t the ranking that caused so much anger in the Forest fanbase, it was the fact that Carragher had the audacity to refer to the club as ‘Notts Forest’ rather than ‘Nottingham Forest’, something which touched a nerve given the rivalry with fellow Trentside dwellers Notts County.

And Forest fans weren’t willing to let that little faux pas slide as they tore into the pundit for what some people found was an ignorant comment.

Let’s hope that he’s learned his lesson and it doesn’t happen again.
