I’m 90% sure that there’s a compliment hidden in there somewhere.

With reports circulating over the weekend that AC Milan were looking at bringing in Matty Cash in a deal in the region of £15m, it’s certainly caused a bit of a stir around the City Ground.

And it’s something that has even managed to cause a few waves away from West Bridgford as well, as former Nottingham Forest manager Mark Warburton has had his say on the matter.

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, Warburton talked about the supposed valuation of the 22-year-old before saying how it’s an indication of just how crazy the January transfer window can become:

“Forest do not want to lose Matty Cash so they put an outrageous price on him. If somebody came in with a £10m bid would they say no? Would they say no to a £12m bid? It’s January, and if teams want to reach then away you go, but January is so difficult for all of these reasons. It’s very, very hard to find value in January. Sometimes you’re better off keeping your powder dry until the summer.”

That’s why I think Nottingham Forest were incredibly smart by offering him a new contract before the window started.

I said at the time that it was a way to essentially ward off any potential suitors, because an increase in value is a way to give you the upper hand when it comes to negotiations, and as Warburton hinted at, if a club wants to come in with a crazy offer, then all power to them and it can get you way more than he might actually be worth.

And it’s really something you can apply to anyone else in the squad that might be under threat of leaving the club in the near future, for instance Joe Worrall, something I’ve spoken about before.

Will the club sell Cash if Forest don't go up?

Yes

Yes

No

No

And at least we’ve got ourselves a good platform to build on in the summer, because if his performances keep up the way they have been, who knows what he could be worth in six months’ time?
