So, now the January transfer window is closed and all of our business has been done, promotion will have to be achieved with the squad as is. But no, rumour has it we are going to bring in two ’emergency` loan players at the end of the month to strengthen the push for championship status.

Whether the rumours are true or not, it does beg the question; what constitutes an emergency loan? Logically this system should exist to help out a club who have an injury crisis such as two injured keepers or three injured strikers. In reality the loan system is being abused as a method of signing players ‘on loan` with the formalities of a permanent transfer being completed when the window re-opens.

For me, this makes a mockery of the transfer window system, a topic on which I have ranted previously, as essentially it enables players to move between clubs at any stage of the season, negating the use of the transfer window. What is more, because emergency loans appear to require no justification, the name itself is very puzzling. I know that we benefited from this last year when Nathan Tyson was brought to the club outside of window, but it still doesn`t make any sense.

It makes you wonder why they don`t just do away with all of these crazy rules and loop holes but unfortunately you get the impression that this is merely the latest example of a plethora of seemingly pointless changes to what is becoming a very over-governed sport. To me, this is just another example of football moving further and further away from the realms of reality and common sense. Then again, I guess the clowns at the FA need something to do in their lunch hour.
