Explained: Who could replace Carl Jenkinson for Nottingham Forest’s meeting with Swansea?

|

Carl Jenkinson has been ruled out of action for a number of weeks and will miss Saturday’s meeting with Swansea as a result. With Jayden Richardson on loan at Exeter and Tendayi Darikwa injured, Sabri Lamouchi may have to turn to Matty Cash at right-back.

The 22-year-old operated in the role earlier in the season but isn’t a natural in defence. He’s more comfortable in midfield but Forest have run out of options. As per Transfermarkt, Cash has made seven appearances in all competitions this season, five of which have come at right-back, so it makes sense to use him in Jenkinson’s stead.

He started against West Bromwich Albion (August 3), Leeds United (August 10), Birmingham City (August 17) and Charlton Athletic (August 21) before being dropped against Fulham (August 24) and left on the bench against Preston North End (August 31).

As per WhoScored, the Englishman has racked up 343 minutes of playing time in the Championship, scoring one goal, creating four chances, attempting five dribbles and whipping in 24 crosses with 29% accuracy. Cash has also averaged a tackle (6) or interception (4) every 34 minutes.

Lamouchi has faith in Cash and told Nottinghamshire Live in a recent interview: “He is a good option to have. He played that position before Jenkinson signed with us. The first game he started there and played well, against West Brom, and he scored.

“I know it’s not his original position but he has a lot of quality. He just needs to focus more defensively and trust more in his quality because he is a good young player. He is very positive and has improved in that position. He knows in this position he can help the team.”
