Nottingham Forest’s u23s are a month into the new season and have started the campaign strongly. The Young Reds are currently top of the Professional Development League Group North with nine points from four games and are the joint-top scorers in the division (10 goals) too.

Forest beat Bristol 3-1 in their opening game of the campaign (August 14), courtesy of goals from Brennan Johnson (50’, 62’) and Tyrese Fornah (89’). They followed up that win at Ashton Gate with another 3-1 demolition, this time of Queens Park Rangers at the City Ground (August 20). The goals came from Johnson (26’, 73’) & Alex Mighten (69’).

Forest then suffered their first defeat of the season three games in, losing 2-0 to Millwall at Calmont Road (August 26). The Young Reds quickly bounced back, however, with a 4-1 win over Cardiff City (August 31), courtesy of goals from Johnson (8’), Louis Walsh (33’), Will Swan (73’) and Yassine En-Nyeh (90’).

Johnson can do no more to prove he deserves more opportunities under Sabri Laamouchi this season – the 18-year-old has five goals in four appearances. As for Forest, Jimmy Gilligan’s men are two points clear of second-placed Leeds United and next face Ipswich Town on September 9.
