Robert Earnshaw has today signed for Cardiff City, as a free agent.

Earnshaw was out of contract with Forest and failed to agree new terms, despite a new deal being offered by the club.

Cardiff have announced that the deal is subject to clearance from the Football League, but that should merely be a formality.

The Welsh international signed from Derby 3 years ago, in a deal worth £2.65m. That took Earnshaw’s career transfer fees to almost £13m.

At 30 years of age, it’s probably not unfair to say that his best years are behind him. Earnshaw has scored 163 league goals during his career, in 291 full appearances. Last season was something of a barren spell for the striker, with only 11 goals from 43 appearances.

Earnshaw passed a medical with the Welsh club yesterday and will go back to the club where his first team career began in 1997.
