Deal Or No Deal

It is clear from the events that have unfolded at fortress City Ground this week, that the club have been very busy behind the scenes. They did there best to offload top scorer Grant Holt to promotion rivals Bristol City, but the player was having none of it, preferring the sunnier surroundings on the Trent instead. We have learned today that we have failed in an attempt to get Fisher Athletic hotshot Damien Scannell. The player himself apparently turning down offers from Northampton and Swansea as well. We will never know who the club have been chasing in recent weeks, but it would seem that Calderwood does feel there is need for improvement in the squad, despite the fact that we are sitting on top of the League and six points clear. This should be good news for the fans as it shows the manager is not resting on his laurels and is looking to strengthen the side. The fact is though that we have not brought anyone in. This may be because the club and any respective player could not agree terms, or and more worryingly, players no longer consider Nottingham Forest as an attractive move. There is no doubt Forest can beat any club in this division in terms of wages and most probably prospects.

Former Forest player and now manager of Sunderland Roy Keane, was today bemoaning the fact that he has been unable to get anyone in on a loan deal. He said ‘It’s unbelievable that youngsters are looking at the money instead of first team football,’ Whether this has been a factor in any of Forests’ targets will never be known, but we can be sure it won’t be for the lack of trying.

Forest are in the fortunate position of not being desperate to make signings. The squad is big enough and good enough for League 1. If the club are still riding high come January though, they may want to look ahead to what might be next year, as the squad would surely need strengthening for the Championship. I think we can all rest assured that Colin has all this in hand.
