If ever there was an example of why professional footballers should be banned from talking to the press after a game, then Swansea City keeper Dorus De Vries is a shining example to them all.
There will be no arguments from Forest fans that Swansea deserved the points on Saturday, but facts are facts and they didn’t score. That fact is due in no small part to an exemplary goalkeeping display from Forest shotstopper Paul Smith.
De Vries had the brass neck to tell the Swansea Evening Post. ”Forest should get the hell out of here quickly because they must be feeling ashamed after getting hammered like that. They celebrated like they had won the Carling Cup and I suppose if a draw is what they came for they’ve done well. But we hammered them – they had one shot and didn’t do anything else in the game – and if we keep playing like that I know the points will come our way.”
What on earth is he on? To win any game of football you have to score and the simple fact is, that his strikers failed, despite having a shed load of chances. Paul Smith had a fine game and will take great pride in his performance.
Now I did a little digging on our dear friend Dorus and it would appear that he may have something he should be ashamed of himself. Prior to joining the Swans, he was at Dunfermline and courtesy of this article in Wikipedia found this and I quote. ‘On May 11, 2007, he palmed a tame free kick into his own net against Inverness to end Dunfermline’s 7-year stint in the Scottish Premier League. De Vries is considered a good goalkeeper who has represented Holland at U-21 level, but the towering Dutchman is likely to be remembered by Dunfermline fans for his blunder which consigned his side to relegation.’
Swansea fans will do well to remember this. I know Forest fans will. What’s that saying about people in glass houses again?
