Todays’ game at Barnsley was already going to be a heated affair, following the ticket fiasco brought about by the tight fisted Tykes refusal to give Forest fans the same deal on tickets as home fans. This Championship relegation encounter was always going to be a fiercely contested affair, but manager Billy Davies has certainly stoked the fire with his comments about Sheffield United’s Chris Morgan.

Morgan was the player who almost ended the career of Barnsley player Iain Hume, after an elbow to the head caused the player to suffer a fractured skull. Davies has angered both the club and fans over his apparent admiration of the United hardman/thug. Speaking to the Evening Post, he said. ‘It is difficult to turn one or two players into monsters. People like Morgan at Sheffield United, they are experienced, they are grinders and they are nasty. It takes time to get that, but that is what we need. We need one or two of those types to ruffle a few people up and we do not have that at the moment.’

I think we can see why the comments would annoy the Tykes and I don’t think many Forest fans would have been happy to hear his counterpart do the same, but there is history between both managers that goes back to their time together at Preston. It’s no secret that the pair never got on and Davies is said to have sacked Davey, when he was Youth Coach at Preston.

The Barnsley forums have predictably gone ballistic over BD’s admiration for one of football’s bad boys, but it’s all probably been said to deflect attention from his own team. Either way, I hope this isn’t a sign that Morgan is a summer target for NFFC. Although we need some fight in the side, I’m not sure we need the sort that a player like Morgan would bring.
