Like most managers, Billy Davies believes that the demands on the modern footballer are too great. Playing 46 League games in a season, plus cup matches and internationals, is too much for them and he advocates a winter break.

Davies told the official site. ‘I’ve said for a long time that, having experienced a winter shutdown in the past, then there’s no doubt that for me that would always be the best option. It’s a difficult period not only because there’s so many games in so many days, but there’s treacherous weather conditions and it’s difficult for people to travel to games. We’ve got two games in three days. We know we’ve got to train over that period as well and we know we’ve got to be very professional in terms of preparing properly for two difficult games.’

As a fan, I’m against having a break. We already have fortnightly breaks, every time an international crops up and they seem to occur with increasing regularity. From memory, we’ve had three of them already this season. I would agree that clubs play too many games, but maybe making the season longer would be a better answer. Like most fans, I find the pre season insufferable. It goes on forever.

FIFA would no doubt be against prolonging the season. That would infringe on their beloved World Cup. The problem for me, is that I have no serious interest in their over hyped tournament, although I will no doubt find myself glued to the TV, watching every game, in the hope of getting my football fix.

The argument about footballers having to play too many games in too short a time, has been going on for years and it’s set to run for a few more. There are no easy answers, but shutting down for the winter, hopefully isn’t one. Do you think we should have a winter break? You can have your say by joining in the debate on the forum today.
