Davies Attempts To Bring Us Down To Planet Earth

The 1-0 win over Newcastle United at the City Ground in front of a live TV audience at the weekend, has given manager Billy Davies the rather challenging task of keeping supporters feet firmly on the ground.

Hope and belief are dangerous emotions for any football fan to possess, particularly if you’ve followed the Reds’ over the past 10 years. But, thanks to 4 wins on the bounce, some decent acquisitions over the summer, a manager with some tactical nous and a position of 7th in the league table, Forest fans are in the unfamiliar position of daring to dream about promotion.

Billy Davies is trying to bring us all back down to Earth with some sensible words of warning though and his post match comments in the NEP although understandable, will take some believing if the team continues to progress at the same rate it is currently.

The manager says we aren’t ready for the challenge of the Premiership yet and that another season of consolidation in this division, would be better preparation for his young and inexperienced squad. You can’t argue with what he says and if we’re honest, I think most fans would accept a mid table finish this term. He’s also right in saying that it’s still way too early in the season to go thinking about promotion, but sitting pretty in 7th place does tend to get the hopes up somewhat.

It’s all a very long way from where we were this time last season after 12 games, when we were rooted to the bottom of the table and cut adrift of the teams above us. Under the guidance of Billy Davies and his team, the club has made significant progress and it’s there in black and white for even his staunchest critics to see. The table as they say doesn’t lie, not even after only 12 games. If we’re still in this position after 46, I for one will be more than happy. The only problem I see lying ahead, is that despite the wise words of BD, the club are clearly going for it and if we’re not very careful, promotion will be achieved. This is a strange and unfamiliar time to be a Forest fan, very strange indeed.
