Ryan Yates’ first-team debut was cut short as Aitor Karanka made a tactical change, but what we did see of the midfielder in the first half was pretty impressive.
The 20-year-old took to Twitter after the game to express his pride at getting his first appearance for the club:

Some were, however, frustrated at Karanka’s decision to substitute Yates:
Should never have been sub you were playing far better than Watson . Good luck mate.

You played well, glad I was there to witness your debut. Pity you were sacrificed at halftime but it was all for the good of the team.

It’s good to see the midfielder being given game time, and he certainly made a good impression despite the circumstances. The lack of cohesion between the players selected was evident, and of course, the sending off of Jordan Smith didn’t help matters.
Still, the midfielder will be happy with his contribution. Whether he’ll get more chances to impress, we will have to see. Adlene Guedioura, Jack Colback and Ben Watson look to be ahead of him in the pecking order at the moment so I wouldn’t rule out another loan move for the midfielder before the end of the month.
