Ian Breckin has been a long standing figure at the heart of the Nottingham Forest defence and during his time with the club, he’s been the top scorer, as well as being voted the fans Player of the Season in 2006. He was signed by us in a deal believed to be around £350,000 from Wigan, by former boss Gary Megson (thanks to goddammit for the correction) in 2005.
After finding himself transfer listed in January, he won himself a reprieve after a few sterling performances on his return to the side. Despite that, manager Billy Davies has decided not to renew his contract and I for one am glad of that.
After more than 150 appearances in the Garibaldi, he was afforded the privilege of leading the team out at the end of the game with Southampton and received a warm send off from the City Ground faithful, during their walk round the pitch.
At the tender age off 33, he’s not exactly over the hill and should get a job with another club. Whilst I will gladly wish him well, I can’t quite bring myself to jump on the ‘what a great player he was’ bandwagon. It’s my opinion that he is one of the reasons we have struggled for so long and why we as a club have stagnated and not moved forward. In his 150 odd appearances for Forest, I’d say he was average at best and on occasions very poor at worst.
Hopefully his departure will see a better type of player brought in and with it a quality that can take this club forward, instead of where we have been for the past ten or so years. Good luck to him, wherever he goes next….I’m just glad it’s not with us.
