Calderwood Still Has Faith – Do You?

Colin Calderwood is a man who always finds something positive to say, even in the most dire of circumstances. Despite being 11 points behind 2nd placed Carlisle in the League table and with only 8 games left to play, he still considers automatic promotion a real possibility.

Granted it’s still mathematically possible, but it would take one monumental cock up not only on the part of Carlisle, but Doncaster Rovers as well. Even taking into account the fact that we have a game in hand over Donny and that we play them next week, you would have to have optimism that borders on blind faith to think we could achieve it.

Calderwood has an unshakable belief that he can do it, despite the form guide saying otherwise. We would have to win virtually all the last 8 games and hope that the two sides above us crash and burn in spectacular fashion. Forest have won only 1 of their last 6 matches, which does nothing for the confidence of supporters.

The cold hard facts of this season so far, is that we aren’t good enough. We haven’t at any stage of the campaign put together anything better than a 3 game winning run. It’s going to take one helluva turnround in form just for us to stay in the playoff placings, let alone get an automatic one. Whilst you always want to hear the manager being positive, you also want him to have a sense of perspective.

He told the Nottingham Evening Post. ‘The next two might be the games that make the difference. Actually, they have to be the games that make the difference. Otherwise it might become beyond us. We have to try to take six points from these matches. Our automatic promotion hopes will not be gone now. Carlisle will be nervous as a kitten because they have Doncaster right behind them. When they wobble we have to make sure we are going strong. If we can get going and get some back-to-back victories together, we have a chance. It is not a case of it might make a difference, it has got to have a difference if we win the next two. Mathematically, we are still there. But it is the pressure that can be applied on them. At the moment they are not looking back at us, they are looking back at Doncaster.’

The season is drawing to a close and with it Calderwood’s managerial career at the City Ground. If he fails to get us promotion, it will rightly cost him his job. Unless he can turn things round with immediate effect then his days are surely numbered. With 8 games to go and judging by how things have gone so far under Calderwood, I am personally counting the days until he’s gone. I lost my faith in him with the defeat at Gillingham over Christmas. He should have gone then.
