Colin Calderwood said today there would be no panic if Nottingham Forest failed to make new signings before the end of the transfer window.

The Reds manager remains hopeful of making at least two signings in the next seven days, revealing that they are ‘very close’ to agreeing deals for more than one player.

But the club remain steadfast in their determination not to be held to ransom by clubs who inflate their valuation of players once they know Forest are interested.

And he believes that it is the selling clubs, rather than Forest, who will find themselves under pressure with the deadline looming next Thursday.

‘Nobody will come in before Sunday, but we are still hopeful that we might get somebody in before Carlisle next week,’ said Calderwood. ‘We are a lot closer than we were after last weekend.

‘The clubs value their players at a certain level. But we are very structured in what we do, there is also a value of a player to us and we won’t go beyond that to a silly degree.

‘We are not particularly under pressure to get somebody before the end of the transfer window. I still feel we have the squad to do it.

‘And we are comfortable, because seven days into February you can take a loan, if required.

‘The transfer window is not the cut-off point that it is for Premiership teams. That makes us fairly comfortable. All it does is give the selling club a cut-off point, not the buying club.

‘A club might allow a player to come to us on loan and agree a permanent deal for him – but they can’t take the money for him until the summer.’

And Calderwood hopes that there will be some movement, once the deadline does draw closer.

‘There might be a bit of news in the near future – hopefully before the end of January anyway,’ he said. ‘We are talking about a couple of players, not just one.

‘We are not at the stage where we have had anyone here for talks, but progress is being made.’

Calderwood does not expect any senior players to be leaving the City Ground.

But he says he is considering offers to take some of the younger squad members on loan.

‘There have been quite a few phone calls, but nobody offering us money for anyone,’ said Calderwood. ‘There is nobody likely to leave at the minute, I certainly wouldn’t have thought that there will be any more players released, not in the position we are in.

‘We have had interest in a couple of the young players, from a Conference level and we are thinking about that.’
