Rumours of former Bolton and Newcastle Utd boss Sam Allardyce being seen at the City Ground, have been around for many weeks now and if the news in this mornings’ News of the World is anything to go by, we know why.

According to the paper, Big Sam is heading a consortium hoping to take over from present Chairman Nigel Doughty. It will be seen as great news for those who see Doughty as the root cause of all the clubs’ problems, but at present we know nothing about who is involved in this consortium, or what kind of financial package they would bring. We don’t even know if the news is true. The News of the World has been known to get it wrong in the past.

It’s just a rumour at present, but one that could explain his presence at the club and one that could also explain why Messrs Barnwell and Clark from the League Managers Association were seen at the ground recently as well. There have been strong rumours suggesting Big Sam has been lined up as the replacement for Colin Calderwood, if he gets the boot.

Allardyce has not worked since leaving Newcastle in January and was hotly tipped to take over from Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth. With him missing out on that appointment, news of his imminent arrival on Trentside has heated up. Hopefully this news will not come as a distraction to the players, who have the small matter of a game at the Sheepdip to contend with today. This news could well turn out to be rubbish, but as the saying goes. There’s no smoke without fire.
