Barnsley have agreed an emergency loan deal with Nottingham Forest for Jordan Smith. The goalkeeper will spend seven days with the Tykes and will go straight into their squad for Saturday’s trip to face Accrington Stanley. Barnsley were forced into drastic measures after suffering a goalkeeping crisis. First-choice Adam Davies is away with Wales while Jack Walton has picked up a knee injury.
Smith has made just one appearance in all competitions for Forest under Aitor Karanka. He played against Bury in the EFL Cup in mid-August but was sent off after 33 minutes of the game. He’s failed to make the matchday squad in the Championship ever since and was an unused substitute in September’s EFL Cup clash against Stoke City. Forest clearly have no need for Smith so it wouldn’t have been a problem in them sending the ‘keeper out on loan.
The shot-stopper, who has made a total of 48 appearances for Forest across the board, would surely jump at the chance at first-team football. He finds himself behind Costel Pantilimon, Luke Steele and Stephen Henderson in the pecking order and may not have a future at the City Ground past next summer given the lack of activity in 2018/19.
