“Areas We Can Still Improve On” – O’Neill Looks For More After First Forest Win

|

Nottingham Forest welcomed Wigan Athletic to the City Ground for today’s Championship action and new manager Martin O’Neill saw his side pick up their first victory under his charge.

Joe Lolley gave us the advantage 19 minutes into the tie, but the visitors did draw level just after the half-hour mark in the game. Second half we stepped up a gear and Matty Cash made it 2-1 within minutes of the final 45 beginning and Adlene Guedioura made it safe with ten minutes remaining as he made it 3-1.

It was Forest’s first win since New Year’s Day and it was a lively game as Wigan also had an opportunity from the penalty spot in the game, but goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon saved Joe Garner’s effort and then stopped Sam Morsy from putting in from the rebound as well.

Speaking to the BBC following the final whistle, the former Republic of Ireland manager said of the performance and his first victory in our hot seat.

“Great to win the game. I thought that we did excellently with some great goals and excellent performances. I’ve got to know the players a bit better in the past week and there were some things we worked on on the training ground that were well-executed today. But, there’s also some areas where we can still improve on. The response from the players today was truly terrific. I thought it was a messy game early on and then Joe Lolley’s early goal gave us some good momentum and the crowd were terrific here again today.”
