Diogo Goncalves has made just three appearances for Nottingham Forest since joining on a season-long loan from Benfica over the summer. The 21-year-old’s last outing for the Reds was in the EFL Cup against Burton Albion on October 30, but he’s failed to make the matchday squad since and could be on his way out of the City Ground in January as a result.

Karanka said in November that Goncalves has taken his time to settle in England, but the season is nearly at the half-way point, so how much longer will it take before Forest’s loan signing is back out on the pitch? The Midlands outfit aren’t blessed with a lot of depth on the wing so a replacement would have to be brought in if Goncalves was to leave.

Oliver Burke is out-of-favour at West Bromwich Albion and may jump at the chance of returning to Forest. Aston Villa winger Albert Adomah was a target for the Reds over the summer and could be available given he’s not nailing down a starting place in the Championship either. Karanka has said he wants to trim the squad of deadwood. Goncalves is one of many who could be axed.

While he’s failed to make Forest’s matchday squad in the league for two months, Portugal’s u21 side continued to feature him in internationals in October and November. Questions should be asked what the club plan to do about the winger, as he’s taking up a space in the squad without contributing.
