The opening game of the 26th ACON tournament got underway in Accra yesterday, with hosts Ghana taking on Guinea. Ghana ran out 2-1 winners, with Reds striker Junior Agogo playing his part.

Agogo played as part of a two man front line alongside Chelsea’s Michael Essien and it was the Reds striker who almost got the opening goal with a bullet of a header that struck the post. The Black Stars hit the wood work 3 times in the first half, but went in at the break 0-0.

It was Agogo who brought the 35,000 crowd to their feet though, when he was brought down in the box by Kalabane. Gyan scored from the spot to give the hosts the lead and send the entire nation wild.

Within 10 mins the visitors had an equaliser through Kalabane. He made amends for his tackle on Agogo by heading into the net. That made for a tense finish, but the Black Stars were to get a stunning winner from a Sulley Muntari thunderbolt from 25 yards.

Next up for Junior and the boys is a game on Thursday against Namibia. KO 19:30GMT.
